Chrissy knew what this was about. With a final groan, she said, “I’ll take it on line one.” “Honey!” exclaimed her mother moments later. “It’s so good to hear your voice.”

“Hi, Mom,” said Chrissy, bracing herself.

“How’s work?” her mom asked.

“Busy with business, as usual,” said Chrissy.

“Look, honey, I know you’re busy, so I’ll make this quick. I’m just finalizing all my meal prep for our big Christmas dinner, and I just wanted to confirm that you and Cole will be there with bells on.”
