Junior Designer (Full Time)

 

Ulysses Press, a trade book press with offices in Berkeley, California, and Brooklyn, New York, is looking for an enthusiastic, full-time Book Production Typesetter/Designer to join our publishing team in either Berkeley, California, or Brooklyn, New York. This job reports to the Director of Production.

 

This person will work closely with the Ulysses Press design team to design, layout, and produce new Ulysses Press titles as well as reformat reprints and ready files for short print runs.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Layout books (from a sample design to finished product), enter changes, make internal proofs, create press-ready PDFs following printer specs.
  • Work closely with coworkers to complete projects per established design standards.
  • Create the occasional custom design for PR or marketing.
  • Design and finalize covers for new titles and backlist reprints–fluency with Photoshop and Illustrator (and an artistic eye) are required.
  • Strong problem solver with knowledge of the design challenges that may arise in producing books.
  • Coordinate new products and reprint corrections in a timely manner and coordinate closely with the Director of Production.
  • Complete all projects on schedule and track production status closely.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • 1 to 2 years working in InDesign and book production/design
  • A deep understanding and familiarity with InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, including the footnote and track changes functions
  • Careful attention to detail
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong written, verbal, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Knowledge of CMYK printing
  • Experience with QuarkXpress is a bonus
  • Experience using Mac OS
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • College degree or equivalent work experience 

Required InDesign Skills:

  • Making and editing tables
  • Creating and editing master pages
  • Creating and editing paragraph, character, and object styles
  • Maintaining consistency with like style sheets
  • Familiarity with using cross-references, text variables, and repeating folios

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Graphic Design, Typography, and/or Illustration preferred

Compensation and Work Schedule:

  • Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience; standard medical benefits, vacation pay and retirement benefits.
  • Ulysses Press currently offers a “2-3” work schedule (2 days in person in the office are required; 3 days work from home is optional)

Editorial Assistant (Part Time)

Ulysses Press, a trade book press with offices in Berkeley, California, and New York City, New York, is looking for an enthusiastic, part-time editorial assistant to join our publishing team in Brooklyn, New York. This job reports to the Director of Editorial & Acquisitions and is a six-month commitment, with a possibility to extend for the right candidate.

 

This person will work closely with the Ulysses Press acquisitions department in our Brooklyn office, providing administrative support in order to find viable book projects on a wide variety of non-fiction topics.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide general administrative support to the editorial team, including preparing acquisition materials, and market research
  • Keep abreast of not only book industry trends but current popular culture, entertainment, lifestyle, and consumer trends
  • Closely monitor sales and search data, reporting regularly on trends
  • Write catalog, cover and promotional copy 
  • Traffic projects through production, developmental editing where needed, and working closely with the production department
  • Assist the marketing and production departments as needed

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree 
  • Highly creative with an interest in pop culture trends
  • Proven ability to juggle several projects at once while meeting deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to problem solve, work independently, and complete tasks without supervision 
  • A strong interest in book publishing, specifically non-fiction
  • Ability to commute at minimum once a week to our Downtown Brooklyn office

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience writing marketing copy and/or developmental editing
  • Experience with data analysis and/or working with large datasets
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign)

 

Compensation & Work Schedule:

  • Hourly rate of $21.63
  • 16 hours per week (with at least 8 hours per week in the office vs. remote)

Marketing Assistant (Part Time)

 

Ulysses Press, a trade book press with offices in Berkeley, California, and New York City, New York, is looking for a social-savvy, part-time marketing assistant to join our publishing team in Brooklyn, New York. This job reports to the Director of Marketing and Operations and is a six-month commitment, with a possibility to extend for the right candidate.

 

This person will work closely with the Ulysses Press marketing team in our Brooklyn office, providing digital marketing and publicity support for book projects on a wide variety of non-fiction topics.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide general marketing support including product photography, book mailings and press releases
  • Run an innovative organic social media program across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and other platforms
  • Closely monitor marketing trends both inside and outside the book publishing industry
  • Post updates to the Ulysses Press website 
  • Research, pitch and craft blog posts and articles based on SEO trends and existing Ulysses IP
  • Craft and run digital advertising campaigns across multiple platforms

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree 
  • Highly creative with an interest in social media and digital marketing
  • Experience using a variety of social media platforms, as well as social planning programs like Hootsuite and Adespresso
  • Experience with Photoshop, Premiere and other Adobe Creative Suite programs
  • Proven ability to juggle several projects at once while meeting deadlines
  • Excellent verbal, visual and written communication skills
  • Ability to problem solve, work independently, and complete tasks without supervision 
  • A strong interest in book publishing
